Who We Are
Legacy Donor Foundation was founded by David Voelker in 1999 with the mission to save and heal lives by inspiring Louisiana residents to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. We accomplish this mission by providing education programs and public awareness activities to the citizens of Louisiana.
When Legacy was founded there were only 450,00 names on Louisiana’s Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry. Today, due to strong marketing and public relations campaigns and comprehensive education programs, Legacy has helped grow the registry to over 2.4 million names. While we are making progress, there is still a long way to go.
Unfortunately, in the U.S., another person is added to the transplant waiting list almost every 10 minutes – that’s about 144 people joining the national waiting list every day! While 84 life-saving transplants occur each day on average, 22 people die each day waiting for a transplant due to the shortage of available donor organs.
There are over 2.4 million people registered on the Donor Registry in Louisiana. In 2016, there were about 532 transplants that took place and 13% of those were from living donors. With over 2,100 people on the transplant waiting list in Louisiana, this isn’t enough.
But it doesn’t have to be this way…
Through your financial contribution, you can help us grow the registry. Each registered organ, eye and tissue donor has the potential to save 9 lives through organ donation, restore sight to 2 people through eye donation and enhance the lives of up to 50 people through tissue donation.
YOU can help save lives.
YOU are the answer.
Donate Life Louisiana
Donate Life Louisiana is a statewide alliance of organizations whose mission is to educate the citizens of Louisiana about organ, eye and tissue donation, encourage them to register as donors and foster family acceptance of the process. We envision a world with no loss of human life or function due to a lack of available donor organs or tissues and a society that accepts and supports donation as a natural and beneficial extension of life.
